Academic / Research

Being a 'musician' is a multi-faceted challenge, especially when one of those facets is to earn a living from it. There are a huge number of contexts and ways to be a 'musician', and each of these carries with it both general and context-specific challenges.

Tim's academic and research interests are currently centred upon the attributes and knowledge exhibited and valued by professional musicians, and how these are developed both inside and outside of the educational world.

Tim's PhD research is currently being written up, but some of his research output has been published in the following publications, as a co-author with Professor Lucy Green.

Smart, T. and Green, L. (2017) Informal learning and musical performance in J. Rink, H. Gaunt and A. Williamon (Eds.) Musicians in the Making (New York, OUP)

Green, L. and Smart, T. (2017) Learning Music: Informal Processes and Their Outcomes in R. Ashley and R. Timmers (Eds.) The Routledge Guide to Music Cognition (New York, Routledge)
